Most employees and employers cringe when they hear the term disability. In most cases we find that this is because employees and employers alike don't really understand what disability insurance is or how affordable it can be. At the simplest level, disabilty is simply paycheck insurance. If you are hurt or get sick and are out of work, how will you pay your bills? Do you have enough savings to live on to retirement? Will you be able to afford the medical premiums so you can continue your treatment? Most people would answer no to all of those questions. And that is exactly where disability insurance comes into play. It is not something that people use all the time, but when someone does need that coverage, it really impacts that person's life and takes care of their family when they would otherwise be really struggling. Disability coverage in the group environment is very affordable as it is based on salary and age. It can be offered as an employer paid benefit or a completely voluntary program so there are lots of options from a group offering standpoint. The important thing to remember is this. It doesn't matter how good your medical plan is for your employees. If someone is hurt or sick and they are out of work, chances are they will not have the means to pay their medical premiums. As an employer, you can help provide that added level of protection which is pricesless. On average, it is also about 80 - 90% less costly than the premiums you are paying for medical right now. So why is that you don't offer disability coverage again? |
